Puri District, in the Central region is a district of Odisha with its administrative headquarters located at Puri city. According to 2011 census, the district encompasses a geographical area of 3479 sq km and has a population of 16,98,730 (persons) including 8,65,380 (males) and 8,33,350 (females). The district has a sex ratio of 963 (females for every 1000 males. The major religions in the district are Hindu (96.83%) and Muslim (2.71%) of the total population respectively. The literacy rate in the district is 84.67% (persons), 90.85% (males) and 78.28% (females). Main spoken languages are Odia (95.09%), Urdu (2.36%), Telugu (1.92%). Labour Force Participation Rate is 56.58% for the year 2022-2023. Main source of income in the district is from the agriculture sector and per capita income is Rs. 31,960. The crime rate in the district is 330.60 for the year 2022. Total cropped area is 1,64,341 in hectares and the forest area is 285.72 in sq km (2021).
